Sunday, (July 30, 2017) is International Friendship Day.
True friendship is something I cherish. For so long I held on to the pain that came from past friendships ending, that I pushed away all the friends that I did have. I believed that I didn’t need anyone, I didn’t need any friends because none of them needed me. Over the years I’ve isolated myself and chose to be alone when I should have surrounded myself with those who love and care about me.
Friendship is important, much more important than we may think it is. As independent as we may be, we all still need a solid community, a community that we find through friendship.
True friends will be there for you, even when others walk away.
True friends will tell what you need to hear, even though you don’t want to hear it.
True friends will lift you up when you’re down, pick you up when you fall, and be your loudest cheerleaders.
True friends will love you and all of your quirks.
True friends will be the reasons you understand why friendship is so important.
Realizing that friendship is essential to living a full life was one of the greatest breakthroughs I’ve had thus far. I’m so grateful for all of my friends who have been and are still there for me, even after I’ve messed up over and over again. Without them, I wouldn’t be who or where I am today.
To those of you who have been hurt by people who you thought were your friends, I’m sorry. I hope that all of you are able to find your true friends, your community.
